What to plant right now!

April 3, 2010

EVERYTHING! Lol, ok, just about. I mean, if you aren't out planting today, you're crazy! Or, working, like me. Hopefully you're not, and you can get out there and dig in the dirt. Here are some suggestions of things you can plant now (for the N. Texas area).

If you haven't already, get your tomatoes in the ground - do it now! Garden centers should have their peak inventory on tomato varieties now and you don't want to wait much longer to plant them. If peppers are in stock you can go ahead and start planting them now. They like it warm so they may not take off for a few more weeks. It might be a bit cool to direct seed zucchini, squash, okra, melons and cucumbers, but if it stays warm for another week or so then you can get them in the ground. Mid-month you can start planting transplants of eggplant, okra, peppers, cucumbers, squash, zucchini.

This is a perfect time to plant Japanese maples, roses, foundation shrubs and most perennials. It's been a long cold winter, so plants that may be running a bit behind will be perennials that go dormant underground for the winter: Hostas, daylilies, acanthus and the like. You may need to wait a few more weeks  for there to be availability on some of those varieties.

It's a great time for annual color...get petunias, geraniums, zinnas, DragonWing begonias, marigolds, lobelia, impatiens and much more in the ground and containers now.
